The 48-year-old former Green Beret, who will face charges in a federal court in Manhattan, ran SilverCorpUSA, a Florida-based security firm that admitted its responsibility for a maritime raid launched from Colombia against the Venezuelan nation.

This right-wing armed incursion was intended to prompt chaos in the South American country so as to create the conditions to remove President Nicolas Maduro from office.

The coup, however, failed thanks to the timely intervention of the popular militias, which managed to capture several mercenaries among whom were former Green Berets Luke Denman and Airan Berry.

In 2023, these two individuals, who remained imprisoned in Venezuela, returned to the United States thanks to a prisoner exchange through which Washington released the Bolivarian diplomat Alex Saab.

“An unsealed federal indictment out of Tampa, Florida, accuses Jordan Goudreau and a Venezuelan partner, Yacsy Alvarez, of violating U.S. arms control laws when they allegedly assembled and sent to Colombia AR-styled weapons, ammo and other defense equipment requiring a U.S. export license,” AP reported.

According to investigations carried out in the years following the events, Operation GedeĂłn was planned by transnational far-right groups that wanted to assassinate Maduro and support former Senator Juan Guaido, who had proclaimed himself president of Venezuela with the support of the United States.

The arrest of Jordan Goudreau comes at a time when the Venezuelan oligarchy and its international allies are attempting to stage a new coup to prevent Maduro, who was re-elected as president in the July 28 elections, from leading his nation until 2031.
